Consider the case of Earl Crockett
Who, at age Sixty-five, in his pocket
Has money to burn',
And with a year's leave, in turn,
Has put Heidelberg first on his docket.

If professor you'd be, then don't knock it,
It's a rich, golden door - just unlock it.
When retirement time comes
You'll be loaded with funds
You want proof? There it is - our man Crockett.

There's more to Earl than limb and part,
He doesn't fear or cower;
Inside is youthful mind and heart
And faith and strength and power.

There once was a boy named Earl
Who grew up and found him a girl
Della's heart he did win
With his now famous grin
And their life, since, is one constant whirl.

I sing of the virtues of Earl,
Whose character shines like a pearl.
    May a carnpus-wide banner
    In suitable manner
To this pearl named Earl unfurl.

There was a professor from Boulder,
Who a bureaucrat's chores came to shoulder;
    While he played second fiddle
    And man in the middle
He grew mellower, wiser, and older.

There is a vice-prexy name Crockett,
Who is neither a bomb nor a rocket,
    But a resolute man
Who has shown how he can
In the cause of the "Y" really sock it.

Behold, our amiable Vice-President
Moves to faculty status in residence
Stepping down from his throne
   without even a groan
Setting up for all deans a new precedent.

They were proper-refined-Earl and Della
Till a fella lost Della's umbrella
As he sloshed through the rain
we heard Earl exclaim,
"Where the hella, is Della's umbrella?"

Our scholarly gent Earl Crockett
Good wishes galore in his pocket
To Europe will fly
Be back by and by
To teach economics the docket.

Sweet Della who stands by his side
Is going, too, but not for the ride.
She keeps Earl so trim
Now you look at him
There is no poundage to hide.

The Crocketts are a wonderful pair
Their accomplishments make us all stare.
We love them both true
We bid them adieu
Their shoes we can't fill, I declare.

So farewell, Earl and Della, so dear
You'll be back here in just one short year
We'll try to get by,
Oft times we will sigh
Oh, would that the Crocketts were here!

There is a fine man named Crockett,
Who took a few dimes from his pocket.
He planned for a trip
By plane or by ship
But ended up going by Rocket.

From Colorado to BYU he came
Wisdom, balance and moderation built his name
Now he and Della will sail
And at the end of the trail
At last a conservative economist Ernie will claim.

He has no vices of any kind.
He never swears--he's always on time.
His shoes are polished--
He loves his wife--
He's never run out of gas in all of his life.
Uses Dial soap so he doesn't stink

He gargles each morning in the kitchen sink.
There's nothing to say
That you already don't know.
To tell you the truth
He's a real great Joe.

You'll miss the excitement and woes
Of BYU forums and shows.
         No Fieldhouse speeches,
         Just crumpets and peaches

At operas - or follies - who knows?
The trout will leap higher just knowing,
That far from their streams you are going;
         Without fear of the dangle,
         Or hooks that entangle,
Their rainbows, like signs, will be glowing!

Like a lamb eating grass by the brook,
Always feed on leaves of a book.
         Don't gamble in stocks
You might end on the rock
Getting took by the hook of a crook.

So you'd rather do it than talk it,
With a passport bulging your pocket
When you climb in that cone,
         They'll shout on the phone:

"Don't rock that rocket, Earl Crockett!"

There was a vice president name of crockett
Who, asked about salaries, said "knock it. "
The budget is flat, your desires are too fit,
And furthermore, Ernie would block it.

There was a young teacher named Earl,
Who married a genuine pearl,
Her first name was Della, who married this fella,
And she's still looked upon as "his girl. "

When considering the graduate division,
Psychology wanted a decision,
Earl slapped down his fist, said "this is no jist,
Sand box is lower division. "

His job was to decide upon classes,
For all byu's lads and lasses,
That one-half credit P.E. was sure not for free,
Crockett need look no further thru his glasses.

Each spring when the contracts were due
Crockett's very first thought was for you.
As negotiations got hot, he slept not a lot.
And he said when the whole mess was through,
"All is well in Zion. Yea Zion prospereth. "

When the departments wanted more budget,
President earl said "no, I begrudge it, "
Gotta cut here and there, in fact everywhere,
After all, the love of money is the root of you know what,
And we don't want you wallowing in sin.

We take off our hats to you,Earl,
And to you our hearts we unfurl,
We all love you Della, and the guy who's your fella,
We think you're two cultured pearls.
